Are You Washing Your Hands?

While most everyone has heard this message, studies have shown that people are still not washing their hands. Some of the messages that were displayed on the screens included: “Water doesn’t kill germs, soap does.” and “Soap it off or eat it later.” The most effective message however was, “Is the person next to you washing with soap?” These reminders seemed to suggest that both men and women are more likely to wash their hands with soap and water when they believe they are being observed. Are You Washing Your Hands? The purpose of this study was to ascertain whether this potentially harmful behavior could be changed through electronic messages that were posted at the entrance of service station toilets. A study published in the American Journal of Public Health reports that out of five hundred thousand people observed, only 32% of men and 64% of women wash their hands when using public restrooms. One of the best ways to prevent bacteria related illnesses and other infectious disease is to wash your hands with soap and water.
