Do Elite Colleges Provide an Advantage?
Over the years that I have been writing about college admissions I have made it clear that it is much more important for a student to attend the college that fits their needs best rather than worrying about the prestige of a college. This often translates into being better prepared for the job market and having the academic strength to be better prepared for graduate school. Those attending the most selective colleges are often benefited by having the greatest amount of money spent on their learning. In other words, some of the most selective colleges are spending the most on educating their students. That is one of the issues that students need to consider when making the decision of where to apply. The study found that the amount of spending on items related to student learning is much greater at the elite colleges than at other colleges. Prestige should not be an issue to a student in choosing a college. I discussed yesterday a new report out that found that colleges in general are not more competitive than they were 40 years ago. However, that same report also discussed another important topic. But there are advantages that more selective colleges can offer some students when it comes to the level of learning. In fact, the gap in spending on student learning between the elite colleges and all others is actually increasing. But what they might learn should always be a consideration and this is where elite colleges often provide a benefit. Elite colleges are not for everyone but for students with the academic background to be competitive, the enhanced learning opportunities should be considered when researching colleges that you might want to consider.
