If an Essay has frequent grammatical errors, it will give the whole paper a bad impression score
It may even make your teacher lose interest in reading it, thus giving your essay a low grade.
Common errors in terms of grammar in essay writing include:
Subject-verb inconsistency
Subject-verb agreement is a basic English grammar rule, but many international students ignore it. If you write something like “She read a book every day” in your essay, your teacher will definitely deduct marks!
So make sure you use the correct form of the verb: “She reads a book every day”.
Extra commas
Many international students use commas to join clauses, which is one of the most common English essay writing mistakes.
For example, “He baked a cake, his friend bought a bottle of wine.” This is a typical example of comma misuse.
This sentence can be divided into two separate sentences:
“He baked a cake. His friend bought a bottle of wine”, or a conjunction could be used to join the two sentences: “He baked a cake and his friend bought a bottle of wine”.
Repetition
Many Chinese students use different words to express the same meaning, resulting in tautology. Unnecessary repetition reduces the academic value of the essay, so students should avoid it.
Don’t write “He cooked the food with his own hands for his mother”, where “with his own hands” is superfluous. You can change the sentence to “He cooked the food for his mother”.
Of course, grammatical mistakes are not limited to the above, so international students should pay attention to English grammar when writing essays.
