Hey, dear friends, are you ready? Today I’m going to teach you how to easily handle an academic report (pre for short in English). Don’t be intimidated by its name, it’s actually a way of expressing your ideas clearly through narration. As long as you master the skills, you will find it is not so scary.
First of all, don’t be nervous when facing a pre. Keep a natural, calm attitude and explain as easily as possible. Imagine talking to a close friend and just using simple language (My II Tourmaline is Right, Can You II) to express it. Remember, the pre doesn’t have to be overly formal, so that the listener can feel your sincerity.
In order to facilitate your explanation, I have summarised some useful phrases and sentences for you, remember to practice them:
1. Use “Hey there, everyone!” or “Hello everyone!” as a start, so that you can quickly get closer to the audience. 2;
2. When you introduce yourself, you can say, “Just to explain why I’ve chosen this topic for today’s discussion,” reflecting your reasons for choosing this topic. 3;
3. when you talk about the core content of the article, you can try to organise “As for xxx, we’ll discussyyy since it…”. When you get to the heart of the text, try organising the statements “As for xxx, we’ll discussyyy since it…”.
For images or diagrams on slides, use “Next, let’s dissect the chart/graph/image demonstrating…”. This is a much easier way to get the audience to understand.
How do we introduce our topic? The most direct way is to make your intention clear: “Our primary objective in this presentation is to elaborate…”. This makes your message clear and gets the audience up to speed.
You can then use interactive sessions to increase the chances of interacting with your audience, for example by asking them what they think about a particular argument or how their experience relates to the topic. This will not only spark everyone’s minds, but it will help them engage with your topic more quickly.
When it’s time to really cut to the chase, don’t forget to say, “Alright, it’s now burgers’n’fries time: Let’s delve into…” or “It’s time to get to the point.” or “It’s throw-down time, folks – Let’s scrutinise…”. This way, your audience will naturally follow your lead.
Keep these tips in mind and I’m sure you’ll be able to present your research in a very comfortable, yet insightful way. Don’t wait, get practising!
I look forward to hearing your exciting presentations! Don’t forget, we are partners and we can support each other!
Go for it and fly upwards!
