What exactly is the difference between Essay, paper, and dissertation?

 

Essay, one of the most common words used in study abroad, has the following characteristics:

1 Short.
2 It mainly refers to a student’s coursework or assessment work.
3 It is written on a certain topic, Essay generally refers to a small essay or course paper at the level of a few thousand words, usually only a literature review and a critical analysis of the literature, which can be without independent data and empirical evidence. You can also just talk about your own thoughts and opinions on some works or points of view, which can be critical or agreeable.

Essay is usually used more often in American English. In British English, it is customary to think of an essay as an undergraduate paper.
There are two kinds of academic papers:

1 is a very professional paper, usually written by experts and published in books and journals, usually called a Scholarly paper.
Term papers are essays and papers that are similar to essays and are used as assignments for school courses, and are generally called term papers.

Term papers are usually written by international students and are usually used to describe events, concepts, or arguments and require several pages of printed paper to discuss a topic in detail.
Dissertation, generally, is an essay written to earn a degree or to present the author’s research and findings.
1⃣️ In British English, undergraduate and master’s theses are called dissertations.
2⃣️ In American English, a doctoral thesis is called a dissertation.

1 In UK universities, dissertation is associated with taught masters and undergraduate degrees (e.g. BA, BSC, BMus, BEd, BEng etc.).
2 In US universities, dissertations take up 2-3 years of a PhD career to complete.
Dissertations are typically at the 10-20,000 word level and usually have independent empirical content such as research methodology, data analysis, etc.
