International students, how to write a thorough literature review?

Literature review is not just the experience of books or articles, but the paper with academic value can be formed by combing and integrating the literature. It focuses on various research results in a specific topic in a certain field, classifies them, and then points out the shortcomings and reasons in existing research, hoping to fill these gaps in the future. Specifically, it includes three parts: introduction, body paragraph and conclusion.

In the process of writing, you need to pay attention to avoid falling into the following misunderstandings:

1. Don’t blindly pile on all the information you see;

2. Avoid too subjective evaluation, try to think from the perspective of others;

3. Literature should not be randomly selected, but should be selected closely related to the research topic, key and high quality literature, reflecting the critical thinking of researchers.

In addition, literature review is different from reading notes, which requires in-depth analysis and sorting of the collected data, and then expressing it with its own unique views, otherwise it will be difficult to break through the self-limitation.

On this basis, I provide students with some practical sentence patterns and article structures:

Common sentence pattern

1. This literature is mainly focused on… (This text mainly explores…)

2. In summary, the study has examined… (In summary, this study has investigated…)

3. Based off of these studies, it can be concluded that… From the above research, we may deduce/draw the conclusion that… 4. Finally, the research presented some potential future endeavors and gaps in understanding… (Ultimately, the study suggests some possible future directions and a serious lack of space in understanding…)
