Outline template for the ‘results’ section of a UK thesis

This article continues with the outline template for the “result” section of the thesis. This time, it is only a small section, but it is sufficient to cover the topic.

1. Briefly state the focus of the chapter

As a matter of good writing practice, we should begin each essay with a summary of the main points of the chapter. The model length is about 200 words and focuses on clarifying key information such as the context of the data analysis, the research question, and the hypothesis.

2. Detailed description of data and descriptive statistics results

Within this chapter, we will provide an in-depth analysis of the nature of the data and its distributional patterns, as well as give preliminary conclusions of relevant statistical tests. It is important to prioritise the dominant properties of the data and to expand the discussion from the core to the periphery.

3. Tabling

This has been discussed in detail above, so this is just a reminder of the format.

4. Group breakdown (if applicable)

In cases where more detailed grouping of data is required, after analysing the characteristics of the subgroups, the overall comparative relationships should be summarised.

5. Qualitative findings

When using mixed analyses or limiting yourself to qualitative research, state the major themes, patterns, and insights gained from this. Remember to use quotation marks!

6. Alignment check with research questions or hypotheses

Clearly state the degree of fit between the data results and the hypothesis. Separate this item only as a precautionary measure against forgetting.

7. Limitations

It is common and reasonable in scientific research that there may be some bias in the data. This should not be a cause for concern, but should be presented objectively. Being honest about these limitations often gives the reviewer an impression of rigour and sincerity, which can enhance the rating.
