The five-paragraph essay outline format is suggested below:
● Introduction (first paragraph):
Grab the reader’s attention with an engaging opening that briefly gives background information about the essay and presents three supporting ideas. This is followed by defining the main idea and setting the tone for the entire study.
● Main body section (second to fourth paragraphs):
Each body paragraph consists of a topic sentence and corresponding supporting evidence. In each paragraph, the topic sentence is first introduced and then supported with strong evidence. Finally, it is then summarised with a concluding sentence to ensure that the points are made clearly and effectively in each paragraph.
● Conclusion section (fifth paragraph):
This section aims to review the main argument of the essay and deepen the central idea, as well as to care for the implications of the research findings for practical applications and to raise the level of the thesis.
It should be noted that the 5-paragraph pattern is not mandatory, and the actual length can be adjusted according to the word count of the paper; in addition, the Thesis Statement, as the core of the whole academic paper, should be given enough attention to ensure that all the discussion can be closely centred on this important concept. In terms of paragraph structure, it is recommended to use “thesis-argument-conclusion”, which is a clear, easy-to-understand and logical way of presentation.
