Dissertation Reference Format Requirements for International Students

In the text

o Citation with author and year: When quoting someone else’s words or ideas, add a parenthetical () at the end of the sentence and include the author’s information and the year of publication; this should be included regardless of the media source. For example, (Jones, 1946; Smith, 1948) ……

o Direct reference to the author(s): If the author(s)’ name(s) appears in the text (e.g., “xxx notes/concludes recommendations,” etc.), simply put the year in brackets [(]) after the name(s). e.g. Jones (1946), Smith (1948) research findings ……

Other cases

1) Works by the same author in the same year: If an author publishes two works in the same year, they should be labelled as (Author 2005a) or (Author 2005b) to differentiate them.

2) Multiple citations of newspaper articles: If multiple newspaper articles are to be cited in a single article, the date of each article must be clearly stated, e.g. “[The Guardian, October 18, 2005]”.

Endnotes

Please be sure to include references at the end of the paper. The format does not need to follow the numbering order of the Chinese text, but only the order in which they are cited in the text. The citation for each field is shown below:

o Single author: The book citation format is “Last name, first name (abbreviated). (Year) Title (italicised or underlined). Edition (if given). Publisher.”

o Journal article citation format is “Last name, abbreviation. (Year) Title of article. Journal name Volume (part number) : Page.”

o Web or e-zine citation format is “Last name, first capital letter of first name. Article title. Journal name (italicised), Volume (part number), Issue (number), Page. URL.”

o Newspaper article citation format is “Last name, first capital letter of first name, year. Name of article. Newspaper name (in italics), change the date the article was published, page number.”

TWO AUTHORS: Use “and” or “&” to connect two authors, and the rest of the sentence is the same as before. Example: Kirk, J. & Munday, R. J., 1988. Narrative analysis, 3rd edition. Bloomington: Indiana University Press.

Three or more authors: In addition to the first author listed, the remainder are suffixed etal e.g. Grace, B. et al., 1988. A history of the world. Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Press.
