How to Write English Essays and Assignments for International Students

a) Use section structure

This is an uncommon approach for many Chinese students as they rarely write essays of more than 5 pages in their home country or local high school, yet it is not uncommon when they enter university. Continuing to use “firstly”, “secondly” and other types of starting sentences will lead to a loss of ideas. Therefore, it is recommended to use the section structure (chapter points). The steps are as follows.

1. Divide the text into sections. 2;

2. each section contains a number of paragraphs; 3. the first paragraph of each section is divided into a number of sections.

3. the first paragraph of each section gives a brief introduction. 4. the last paragraph of each section gives a brief introduction;

4. a summary at the end of each section.

b) Nounised verbs and persuasive language

The noun form of a verb is more persuasive than its original form. From the Foreign Sales Secrets website:. Even if one disagrees with an adjective or adverb in a sentence (e.g., “I won’t learn this quickly”), one still accepts what is being modified (e.g., “You will learn this”), suggesting that adjectives and adverbs are more effective in proving one’s point. Examining words such as “notice, realise, understand, experience” shows that they can express conscious presuppositions.

c) Citing others’ papers

It is well known that the definition of plagiarism abroad is very strict and that plagiarism can be committed in many different ways, including the collation of one’s own published texts, essays, or research results in order to present them in a new light. According to the definition on the AJE Scholars website, “In practice, self-plagiarism is any attempt to steal your previously published text, paper, or research and make it look like a new chapter.” . The main reason for this is publisher copyright, which still exists despite being a personal creation. Plagiarism may be involved if it is not properly cited. Your own work requires the same attention to citation!

d) Assignment Formatting Requirements

It is essential that assignments are completed in accordance with the instructor’s rules, otherwise a lamentable number of unfair marks will be deducted from the initial submission of the draft (the instructor still expects students to listen carefully). Typically, the formatting requirements are as follows:

1. 1.5 times the line spacing;

2. font: time new roman. 3;

3. font size 12 or above.

The above rules must be mastered in order to improve marks effectively.
