An introduction to the four common norms for writing study abroad essays

1. Harvard format:

(1) Recommended font size is Times New Roman or Arial 12.

(2) Double spacing is recommended.

(3) Left justification makes the text neater.

(4) Allow about half an inch of width on either side of the text.

(5) paragraph indentation to make the article clearer

(6) title and page number: title is too long need to add page numbers in the upper right corner and shorten the length of the title

(7) Citation: use the author-date annotation method

(8) Reference list: separate page, placed after the text

2. APA (American Psychological Association) format:

(1) Recommended Times New Roman 12-point font.

(2) Double spacing is recommended.

(3) Allow about half an inch of width on both sides of the text.

(4) Add a header in the upper left corner of each page with a shortened version of the paper’s title, including punctuation if less than 50 words.

(5) The title page should be on a separate line, including the title of the article, author’s name, affiliation and other information.

(6) Citation: add brackets after the citation (author, date), or directly to the author as the subject, followed by brackets to mark the date.

(7) List of references: a separate page, placed after the main text.

3. MLA (Modern Language Association) format:

(1) Times New Roman 12-point font is recommended.

(2) It is recommended to set double spacing without additional paragraphing.

(3) Allow about one inch of width on the left side of the text, with no special requirements for the right side.

(4) The author’s surname and page number should be displayed in the upper right corner. The first page of the paper does not need page number, and the page number should be set at the beginning of the second page of the text.

(5) Paragraph indentation: press the ‘Tab’ key to indent 0.5 inches.

(6) The title page should be on a separate line, including the title of the article, author’s name, tutor’s name, class/course name, date and other information.

(7) Bibliography format: separate page, placed after the main text

4. Chicago (Turabian) format:

(1) Times New Roman 12-point font is recommended.

(2) The title page should be located in the centre of the page, including the author’s full name, course name, instructor’s name, date and other information, and the title should be double-spaced if it is too long.

(3) The left side of the text should be about one inch wide, and the right side has no special requirements.

(4) Line spacing: double spaced, no additional paragraphing required

(5) The author’s surname and page number should be displayed in the upper right corner; no page number is needed for the title page, and the page number should be set at the beginning of the second page of the text.

(6) In-text citation: use footnotes at the bottom of each page to indicate the source of the citation

(7) Bibliography format: separate page, placed after the main text
