1. Overly subjective
Academic writing should avoid the frequent use of words that express subjective opinions such as “I think/believe”. Unless the topic specifies otherwise, such writing will be considered unconvincing.
In writing, it is advisable to use the active voice as little as possible, and instead use the passive form to enhance the academic nature of the writing. Use more academic vocabulary when expressing personal opinions, for example:
It could be the case that…
It might be the situation that…
One may suggest that…
It might be indicated that…
2. Scattered and disorganised comments
Foreign professors attach great importance to critical thinking. Targeted and practical criticism can significantly improve the quality of an essay. However, it is important not to make generalisations that apply to most experiments, as this may not be the essence of the critique.
When citing a critique, discuss in detail how the idea affects the results and conclusions of the experiment, and find sufficient evidence to support it. If there is no evidence, the criticism should be treated with caution.
3. Inserting new ideas for no reason
Do not add new ideas at the end. Instead, it should only summarise the argument and reiterate the main idea. If a new point is made out of the blue, it will confuse the professor.
4. Citation problems
The references used in the article must meet the requirements of the tutor. Avoid using Chinese literature, which may not be understood by foreign teachers due to language reasons. At the same time, the selected literature should be able to withstand verification. We recommend the following platforms to access English literature:

5. Abuse of repetitive phrases
Students who do not accumulate enough words may face difficulties when writing. However, excessive use of synonyms not only looks monotonous, but also tends to make the professor think that the meaning is redundant. It is recommended to use relevant tools to help write essays.
The essay is usually structured in five paragraphs, with the main body divided into three sections, each of which is addressed from a different angle. The conclusion comes first, followed by an analysis of the analysis, it should be borne in mind that the whole essay should not continue to focus on a single point of view, so as not to reduce the score.
6. Formatting errors
Be sure to master the correct Reference format, to avoid being suspected of academic misconduct due to formatting errors. Common reference formats include Harvard, APA, MLA, and Chicago style. Different formats have different citation methods, so make sure that the format you use matches your tutor’s requirements.
7. Plagiarism
Plagiarism should not be attempted no matter how difficult the essay is. Plagiarism is considered a serious disciplinary offence and will lead to disqualification from the degree. Plagiarism, self-plagiarism, or falsification of data is prohibited by the university.
The risk of plagiarism should be assessed by checking the essay after completion. If the rate of content reproduction is too high, it should be reduced to within the norm before submission; plagiarism (including self-plagiarism) is strictly prohibited. Responses to resolve plagiarism issues are cumbersome and have serious consequences.
