The Five Step Discussion Method and Writing Tips for International Student Theses

What is the discussion section? Simply put, it means combining our research findings with the overall environment, interpreting our research findings, and evaluating their relationship with existing research literature and the research questions we started. Meanwhile, we need to provide reasons to support our conclusion. When discussing, data is necessary, but it cannot be limited to one topic to avoid readers feeling that our research is not comprehensive enough. Overall, our discussion is about wanting to know what new information our research can tell us.
The discussion section can generally be divided into three categories:
① The results are basically the same (with low gold content);
② The results are different, but there is no in-depth research on the reasons (there is room for improvement);
③ The results were different and explanations were provided (in more depth).
Next, I will introduce the methods taught by Professor James Hartley from the School of Psychology at the University of Kiel in the UK in 2008, to help everyone explore how to write exciting discussion sections.
Step 1: Firstly, review and clarify your research findings and achievements.
We need to emphasize once again the main conclusions and key findings of our research, so that readers know what research we have conducted.
Step 2: Compare our research results with those of others, and compare the advantages and disadvantages of our research with those of others (combined with relevant literature).
This is a comparison between our research results and those of others, to see if our research is better than theirs, or if there are any other supplements. This comparison requires reference to relevant literature.
Step 3: List the possible issues that may exist in our research.
We need to list the possible issues that may exist in our research, such as research methods, survey subjects, data collection, etc.
Step 4: Provide suggestions to address these issues.
We need to propose suggestions to address these potential issues, so that readers can know that our research has the potential to continue and continuously improve.
Step 5: Share with colleagues to see if they can raise new questions and involve more people in the research.
For example, we can say:
Now that we have completed the writing of the main text, what are the techniques for writing the discussion section?
1. Clear structure
Firstly, we need to establish a clear framework and then fill in the various ideas we come up with, ensuring coherence between them.
2. Do not deviate from the key points
We need to highlight the key findings and outcomes of our research, and tell readers how our research answers our research questions.
3. Illustrated with text and images
If necessary, we can use charts to support our viewpoint, but don’t make them too flashy, but make them simple and easy to understand.
4. Illustration principle
For example, we can learn from this approach:
Now, what we need to pay attention to is which content is considered inappropriate in WordMiner. The notes for the discussion section are summarized as follows:
Emphasize:
Please:
① Ensure that the research results are presented in a reasonable and detailed manner, taking into account the research objectives and assumptions.
② Clearly articulate the research findings of this project
